Sustainable energy

If you aim to make long term changes then you have to make plans for sustainable projects. In all our projects we ask the questions; what will happen in five years time? Who will manage it? Who will fund it?

A question facing more and ore industries is how do we fuel this in five, ten, twenty years? Umbrella's projects in Gurje Village all use sources of sustainable energy:

Biogas

Biogas units were built in four schools to fuel the Food For Education programme. The local women's groups must bring buffalo dung to the schools to fill up the biogas tank. The biogas units are designed in such a way that as the dung decomposes it generates gas. This gas is used as the fuel and after a number of months, when the tank is full the dung is extracted and can then be used as fertilizer on the local farms.

Solar Power

Solar Panels were installed in 4 schools and 2 women's groups training centres. This system provides electricity for the school's classes in the dark winter and lights the adult literacy classes which have to run in the evening as this is the only time the women are not needed n the fields or at home.

Hydro-electricity

A hydro-electricity plant was built to provide electricity for the health post and the local communities.

Our renewable energy projects were made possible thanks to our friends and partners such as Rotary Clubs in Nepal, England and Germany and the UNICA Foundation. Umbrella works with many partners and friends to spread our help as far as possible.
