Next Steps

The unemployment rate in Nepal is huge, finding employment, even for qualified candidates, is a huge challenge facing Nepal's youths. Umbrella wants to equip the children with the skills and knowledge to give them a head start in the search or their career.

Vocational training is the newest project for Umbrella. As third level education does not always suit a child's aptitudes or capabilities and as it is a huge financial commitment, Umbrella are seeking out alternative training and education avenues in the form of vocational training.

Vocational training opportunities are plentiful and of a high standard on Kathmandu. Having a trade will also open up the job market in Kathmandu while also equipping the students with transferable skills if they choose to return to their village.

The Himalayas are Nepal's most valuable commodity and bring thousands of tourists every year. The career of trekking guide is a very attractive option for many of Umbrella's children. A Canadian trekking company have generously offered to train our of Umbrella's boys every year and potentially offer them careers when they finish school.

Umbrella's plans for the move to Gurje Village also include plans to build a vocational training centre as part of the school complex. This training centre will benefit both Umbrella children and the local communities.
